Important events: Nov 13, 17 and 24
Next DOC meeting is on Tuesday, November 24, at 7 p.m. in the conference room of The Red Cross Building at the corner of Morris and May in Athens.
We decided to meet on the 4th Tuesday this month, instead of our conventional 3rd Tuesday, because of the event taking place in Meigs County on the 17th as part of the National Day of Action: Freedom from toxic fracking waste and earthquakes. Details will be coming out about how to participate in that action.
The Meigs County Home Rule Committee is leading the local action on Nov. 17, focused on the threat of additional massive amounts of fracking waste to be brought into SEOhio by barge via the proposed Portland dock in Meigs County.
“National Day of Action. This is a national day of fracking protest and we will participate. We plan to meet November 17 on the Pomeroy bridge from 4-6pm. We can get signs made at cost. Bob is going to get signs made by Bruce of Skatopia. We agree on the wording for three signs which can be used over and over:
1. STOP PORTLAND DOCK / BAN RADIOACTIVE WASTE
2. BAN TOXIC FRACK WASTE
3. Remember C8? DON’T BE POISONED AGAIN”
(from the notes of the Oct. 22 Meigs Co. Home Rule Comm.)
The Meigs County action is part of a national effort. November 17: Freedom From Toxic Fracking Waste and Earthquakes: National Day of Action
Fracking has dangerous consequences. Over the last few years, communities across the US have seen increased health problems from hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and more earthquakes than ever before. Oklahoma, for instance, saw only a handful of earthquakes from 1957-2008. In 2011 however, 60 earthquakes were recorded, and many blame fracking for this upsurge.
November 17, 2015 will be recognized as National Day of Action to raise public awareness about the serious threats to public safety from toxic and radioactive waste produced by fracking operations in the United States. Coordinated by five organizations, this Day of Action is incredibly timely because of the increasing numbers of incidents associated with frack waste.
Toxic and/or radioactive waste injected into disposal wells has been linked by scientists as causing earthquakes in Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and other states, including in a number of areas which were previously seismically inactive. Waste transported and injected into wells also has been associated with contamination of water.
The Center for Health, Environment and Justice, Faith Communities Together for a Sustainable Future, Frackfree America National Coalition, Network for Oil & Gas Accountability & Protection, and the Buckeye Forest Council are coordinating the National Day of Action.

OF VITAL IMPORTANCE: talk by Thomas Linzey, national director of CELDF on Friday, November 13, 7 p.m., Morton Hall 201, on the Ohio University campus.
“Breaking a fixed system: corporations, fracking, and the Community Rights Movement”
Linzey understands how far we are removed from democracy (It is not fair; it is fixed.), and what steps communities like ours can take to protect themselves from corporate interests powered by greed and unconcerned about the health, welfare and liberties of local people.
Thomas is a great speaker. Do not miss this event!!!!
